13/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – EuroCommerce welcomed on Tuesday 12 February the inter-institutional agreement reached on the same day on the Regulation for increased transparency and sustainability of scientific risk assessment in the food chain (see EUROPE 12192). The organisation sees this as a means of increasing confidence in EFSA's work. "Retailers and wholesalers in Europe support the work of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in its role as the independent European voice for food safety. Ensuring that the food we sell is safe and maintaining consumer trust is central to our business", said EuroCommerce's Director-General Christian Verschueren. In particular, he welcomed the expected progress towards faster risk communication and hopes that the agreement will lead to clear and coordinated messages in the EU in the event of a crisis such as the Fipronil egg crisis in 2017.
