EurEau relieved by European Parliament vote on water reuse for agricultural irrigation

13/02/2019 (Agence Europe)EurEau breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday 12 February following the European Parliament vote in support of the proposal for a regulation on the reuse of urban waste water for agricultural irrigation, as long as it is safe. Reason for relief: the rejection of the amendment that would have made water reclamation facility operators responsible for any possible contamination of the soil or of an agricultural product. “Common sense has prevailed. If the amendment had passed, the entire water reuse practice would have been jeopardised, as no operator would have risked producing reclaimed water under the threat of having to compensate for pollution damage they are not responsible for”, said Bertrand Vallet of EurEau. According to the approved text, operators will be responsible for the quality of the water recovered up to the point of delivery. (AN)
