Home stretch entered in negotiations on technical measures

13/02/2019 (Agence Europe)As we went to press, negotiators for the three EU institutions were still trying to reach a compromise on technical fisheries measures (see EUROPE 12191) on the evening of Wednesday, 13 February. The Council's mandate provides for a ban on electric trawl fishing in early 2022, while the European Parliament was expecting an immediate ban. The Dutch press reported that the College of Commissioners had allegedly decided not to take action on the suggestion from the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to launch an infringement procedure against the Netherlands regarding electric fishing, which provoked reactions from MEPs hostile to this technique, including Isabelle Thomas (S&D, France). The British Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, has announced that EU vessels will no longer be able to carry out electric trawls in British waters after Brexit. (LC)
