Interoperability of information systems, inter-institutional negotiations may be concluded by 5 February according to European Parliament rapporteur

The European Parliament's rapporteur on the interoperability of European information systems, the Dutchman Jeroen Lenaers (EPP), hopes that the trilogue of 5 February will be the last, thereby concluding work on the rules presented by the Commission at the end of 2016 (see EUROPE 11924). He hopes that the Parliament will be able to vote on this package in April.

Mr Lenaers updated his colleagues in the Civil Liberties Committee on the progress of this issue, which made a breakthrough on 13 December. In a new trilogue (see EUROPE 12162), Parliament and Council negotiators reached agreement on the most important political points, for example how law enforcement agencies will access the common register of identities, and the access credentials required, which are limited by the Parliament. The negotiators also validated the Parliament's idea of setting up an Internet portal so that potential injured parties can request to have their data rectified or removed.

Several points are still outstanding, such as the deadline for the entry into force of this new legislation, which, as a reminder, creates systems and new registers to ensure interoperability between European databases such as VIS, ECRIS-TCN, ETIAS, Input/Output, and should help to prevent identity fraud. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
