23/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – MEP Jan Zahradil (ECR, Czech Republic), nominated ‘Spitzenkandidat’ of the European Conservatives for the European elections in May (see EUROPE 12136), expressed his concern about the strengthening of a French/German axis trying to impose its vision of the European integration project on the other Member States on Tuesday 22 January, when the Treaty of Aachen was signed (see EUROPE 12177). "If the EU’s two largest states want to work together, that’s up to them. But this should not be an attempt to control everyone else. Individual countries are best placed to decide what’s best for them. This means maintaining decision-making autonomy on foreign policy, taxation and migration issues ", he said in a statement. (MB)
