23/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 23 January, Member States' ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) adopted the Council Decision on the conclusion of the amendment of Protocols 1 and 4 to the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement with Morocco. These amendments are made by an exchange of letters and follow the judgment of the EU Court of Justice of December 2016 that the EU/Morocco Agreement does not apply to Western Sahara, but it is possible that this territory may be covered with the explicit consent of its population (see EUROPE 11694). The purpose of amending these protocols is to ensure that products from Western Sahara benefit from the same trade preferences as those granted by the EU to Moroccan products covered by the association agreement. The Council is expected to adopt the amendments definitively at the Agriculture/Fisheries Council on 28 January. The European Parliament gave its agreement on 16 January (see EUROPE 12173). (CG)
