23/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 23 January, MEPs in the European Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) gave their support, by 16 votes in favour, none against and 7 abstentions for the interinstitutional agreement reached in December on the proposal for a directive establishing a minimum harmonisation of legal frameworks to deal with commercial insolvency (see EUROPE 11962). Overall, the text leaves Member States some flexibility to adapt the new legislation to their existing frameworks. It also strengthens workers' rights, in particular the right to information to which the European Parliament paid particular attention (see EUROPE 12054), and points out that these must be safeguarded throughout the restructuring process of a company. For the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), however, this is far from enough (see EUROPE 12177). The organisation had indeed called on MEPs to reject the agreement. (MF)
