ASECAP expresses a few reservations about platooning

16/03/2018 (Agence Europe)In a policy paper published at the beginning of March, the European Association of Operators of Toll Road Infrastructures (ASECAP) recognised that “platooning”, a mode of transport that aligns semi-autonomous convoy lorries driven by a single driver, was a significant opportunity in terms of tackling pollution and traffic in the road transport sector. ASECAP asserts, nonetheless, that in a number of specific cases, this mode of transport can cause certain safety problems, such as on bridges and in tunnels. It is therefore calling for rules to be introduced to govern this issue. ASECAP is also calling for this practice to be the subject of a specific mention in the revision of the Eurovignette directive currently being debated at the Council and European Parliament (see other article) and for it to be included in the first "mobility" package presented on 31 May by the European Commission (see EUROPE 11799).
