16/03/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 16 March, the European Commission approved a Belgian measure awarding energy-intensive companies partial compensation for higher electricity prices brought about by indirect emissions costs related to the greenhouse gas emissions quota trading system (ETS). This measure, with a budget of €17.5 million over the period 2017-2020, is aimed at businesses established in Wallonia and present in sectors that are particularly exposed to international competition. Through this measure, the Belgian authorities are aiming to avoid an increase in the global level of greenhouse gas emissions as a result of European businesses deciding to relocate their activities outside the EU, to states with less stringent environmental legislation. Eligible businesses will be awarded a direct payment during the year following the one in which they bear the costs. (LT)
