Designations reserved for animal-based products do not, in principle, apply to purely plant-based products

In a decision made on Wednesday 14 June, the European Court of Justice argued that purely plant-based products cannot, in principle, be marketed with designations such as ‘milk’, ‘cream’, ‘butter’, ‘cheese’ or ‘yoghurt’, which are reserved by EU law for animal products.
