Tributes to the 150 who died in the Airbus A320 crash

Brussels, 25/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, 25 March 2015, tributes continued to pour in to the 150 victims of the crash of the Germanwings Airbus A320. The aeroplane, which was travelling from Barcelona to Düsseldorf, crashed in southern France on 24 March (see EUROPE 11281).

At the start of its plenary session, the European Parliament observed a minute's silence. “People hit by fate can be certain that the members of the European Parliament stand by them”, said its President, Martin Schulz. Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, said: “In my own name and on behalf of the European Commission, I would like to express my deepest condolences, as well as European solidarity with the people of France, Germany and Spain”. The Commission press room also observed a minute's silence.

François Hollande, Angela Merkel and Mariano Rajoy, the French, German and Spanish heads of state, have travelled to the scene of the disaster. “My dear Angela, my dear Mariano, you can rest assured that everything will be known, that all light will be shed on the circumstances leading to this catastrophe”, Hollande said. Two experts of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are taking part in the investigations. One of them has travelled to the accident site, the other to the offices of the French bureau of investigation and analysis for civil aviation safety (BEA). (Jean Comte)
