Brussels, 25/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - The World Social Forum opened its doors in Tunis on Tuesday 24 March. The forum brings several thousand civil society actors together from all over the world (human rights defenders, activists, unionists and international NGOs). The world of anti-globalisation will attend and the major theme of debt be raised.
The EU will only attend indirectly by financing, through European civil society, an international workshop on the freedom of expression. MEPs from the European left have announced that they will attend.
The only European leader to show up is Greece's prime minister, Alexis Tsipras. The forum's organisers have received an official letter that underlines “the importance of the event since the beginning” of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre “in the universal fight against globalisation and the different forms of marginalising people across the world”. It “looks at the various alternatives that the World Social Forum can create to fight fanaticism, terrorism and violence in all its forms” (our translation throughout). (Fathi B'Chir)
