Brussels, 25/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission states that the Republic of Moldova continued the reforms on its path to Europe in 2014.
“2014 was a period of general political stability (…) The government continued to work regularly on the country's European agenda”, the Commission states in the neighbourhood report adopted on 25 March. Moldova signed its association agreement with the EU on 27 June and since 28 June has enjoyed a visa-free regime. It made progress on the issues of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and on reforms to bring its economy into conformity with the free trade agreement with the EU.
Nevertheless, the Commission reiterates the need to step up the fight against corruption and to make “rigorous” progress in the reforms of the systems for justice and applying the law. Moldova must take measures to improve monitoring in the financial sector - a sector which is facing serious problems that are a risk for the country's economic development and stability. Moldova's constitution must be reviewed in order to forestall the resurgence of institutional blockages.
The Commission also calls on Moldova to continue to engage proactively with Transnistria in order to “promote a mutually acceptable vision for a common future”. Little progress was made in resolving the conflict in 2014. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
