25/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU condemns killing of young Afghan woman. On Tuesday 24 March, the European Union condemned the murder of Ms Farkhunda, 27, who was beaten to death and later burned by an angry mob on Thursday 19 March. The young woman was falsely accused of having burned a copy of the Koran. Her murder is a “tragic reminder of dangers women face from false accusations and the lack of justice in Afghanistan”, stressed the spokesperson to the EU High Representative. Following the action taken by the Afghan authorities, the arrest of 13 suspects and the suspension of 13 police officers for failing to intervene, the EU expresses its hopes that those responsible can be brought to justice. The European Union will continue to put the elimination and prevention of all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls and respect for the rule of law at the centre of its activities in Afghanistan, as the “linchpin of progress towards a better society”, the spokesperson added.
