Brussels, 25/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 25 March, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini welcomed the call the previous day from representatives of Libyan municipalities (during their visit to Brussels) in support of the ongoing UN-led Libyan political dialogue in Morocco (see EUROPE 11280). The Libyan representatives underlined the need urgently to establish a government of national unity. Mogherini said she believed this call was “a strong message to the ongoing political process”.
At the end of the meeting on 23-24 March, the Libyan local authority representatives called for a ceasefire and for the withdrawal of armed groups from all Libyan towns, and they condemned terrorism.
Mogherini said that during the meeting all the participants had insisted on the fact that a political solution must succeed in order to enable an improvement in the living conditions of Libyans. She added that the meeting had helped to build some unity in the fight against the terrorist threat. “Any form of violence can only hamper the political process (…) Only a political solution will ensure a peaceful future for the country”, Mogherini stated.
She also said that the EU stood ready to support the outcome of the political dialogue and to accompany a government of national unity as well as the local authorities “with all possible means”. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
