19/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - It is not thought that consumers in the EU are at any risk of consuming the melamine-contaminated Chinese milk. The European Commission said on Friday 19 September that China does not export dairy products to the EU as it does not have a residue monitoring programme for milk. However, to counter any risk of fraud, Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has called on her services to contact Beijing to seek further information on the level of contamination, and member states have been asked to increase their border checks on all goods from China. The issue will be discussed with Chinese authorities at the joint EU-China Initiative on Consumer Product Safety Compliance (in Beijing, 19-24 September). (A.N./transl.rt)
