MEPs want Hezbollah added to EU terrorism list

Brussels, 19/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - Several MEPs have launched a campaign to get EU Member States to include the Shia Hezbollah movement on the EU's blacklist of terrorist organisations. We have mobilised MEPs to urge the Council of the EU and the European Commission to act as it has been clearly proven that Hezbollah is an organisation with terrorist links, explained Czech ALDE MEP Jana Hybášková, co-signatory of a statement in this connection, in a press release. She said that putting Hezbollah on the list would put a stop to opportunities for it to raise funds and enable its assets to be seized in Europe, she added. Hybaskova heads the EP delegation for relations with Israel. In Germany alone, there are some 900 Hezbollah agents, she said, quoting various estimates. The written statement has been signed by 45 MEPs to date from various political groupings. Only the Netherlands at present sees Hezbollah as a terror organisation. The United Kingdom has only included Hezbollah's armed wing on its terror blacklist. The MEPs' request is unlikely to be successful because France is highly involved in the Middle East peace process and is fundamentally opposed to including Hezbollah on the EU terror blacklist. Responding to any interview with the European Jewish Press, the EU's anti-terror coordinator, Gilles de Kerchove, said he didn't think the EU would add Hezbollah to the blacklist because Hezbollah is active in political life in the Lebanon and several Member States believe that not including it on the list could help bring it closer to the democratic process.
