Brussels, 19/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - In a statement published on 19 September 2008, the EU took note of the new approach of the Taiwan authorities of promoting Taiwan's useful participation in international activities. The EU27 point out, however, that under EU policy for only one China, it does not back Taiwan's moves to join international organisations which require members to be states. The EU is, however, favourable to Taiwan's involvement in specialist multinational forums, particularly when such involvement is important for EU interests. The EU hails efforts by China and Taiwan to improve relations, particularly the agreements on air traffic and tourism, and welcomes the desire of both sides to expand their talks in the coming months.
