Greece invited to grant fairer access to lignite in order to improve competition in electricity sector

Brussels, 05/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission adopted a decision on Wednesday 5 March finding that Greece has infringed certain provisions of the EC Treaty by maintaining rights giving the state electricity provider, Public Power Corporation (PPC), quasi-exclusive access to lignite.

In Greece virtually all lignite is used as a fuel for electricity production in power plants situated close to the mines. Lignite is abundant there; it is also the cheapest fuel available. In...
