THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/lisbon treaty

05/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, believes that the future president of the European Council (Ed: who will be selected by the end of the year) should not be a “European prima-donna or someone who dominates all the others”. In the Belgian daily, Le Soir, Mr Pöttering, nevertheless, refused to mention any possible candidates. He affirmed that “the EU is very complex and can only work when the different institutions and different presidents loyally cooperate and show willing. In addition to the question of political families, the question of a man or woman's personality (to appoint to the different posts) subsequently has to be taken into consideration”. Pöttering also believes that it would be preferable for the EU high representative for the CFSP (who, according to the Lisbon Treaty, has to be nominated before the end of 2008) to be named at the same time as the president of the future European Commission, following the European elections of June 2009.
