Brussels, 27/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission decided to refer Belgium to the Court of Justice for failing to maintain the 90-day minimum level of oil stocks required by directive 2006/67/EC. A formal notice was sent to Brussels in July 2005, then a reasoned opinion in April 2006, calling on it to take the necessary steps to maintain sufficient oil stocks. According to the Commission, the most recent statistics supplied by the Belgian authorities for the first months of 2007 provide no evidence that the situation has been reliably and sustainably stabilised. In fact, according to those reports, the stock levels were 84.2 days at the end of January and 83.5 days at the end of March 2007. (eh)
