Brussels, 27/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The day after the EU-Brazil Summit in Lisbon, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva will be the guest of honour at the high level international conference on biofuels, organised by the European Commission DG Relex in Brussels on 5-6 July. External relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner will open and close the event which will be attended by leaders of the private sector (like MD of Saab Automobile AB, Jan Ake Jonsson), representatives of NGOs and international organisations (like the FAO), ministerial delegations from all over the world: Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Ukraine and the United States. From Europe, the Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates will speak on behalf of the Council presidency and José Manuel Barroso will speak on behalf of the Commission, which will also be represented by Commissioners Andris Piebalgs (Energy), Peter Mandelson (Trade) and Louis Michel (Development). Director of the International Energy Agency Claude Mandil will chair three of the five sessions scheduled. The aim of the conference is to initiate a high level discussion to develop an international approach on biofuels, to assess their potential advantages for sustainable development and the new risks associated with their development.
