THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/usa

30/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - Climate change, the Doha Round and the European call for the US visa waiver scheme to be extended to all EU member states were at the heart of Wednesday's talks in Brussels between the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi, who was accompanied by members of Congress. On climate change, Ms Pelosi stressed “the urgency for us to take action” to halt global warming, using “market-oriented solutions”. This moved Mr Barroso to say that “things are moving, both in the EU and in the US”. With regard to visas - the EU would like exemption for the need to have a US visa, which currently applies to only the 15 old EU member states, with the exception of Greece, but plus Slovenia, to be extended to all the new member states), Ms Pelosi told press only that she would “bring the message home to President Bush”. “I share your view,” she told Mr Barroso, however.
