30/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Commissioners responsible for enlargement, Olli Rehn, and justice, Franco Frattini, issued a warning via the press on Wednesday that safeguard clauses could be applied to Bulgaria and Romania if these states do not succeed in making sufficient progress in judicial reforms and combating corruption. “If there are objective reasons, the Commission must decide on safeguard clauses. It is a question of the credibility of the enlargement process”, said Mr Rehn. The Commission is preparing to publish its report on 27 June on the progress made by these two countries. (bc)
