THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey

22/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Criticising President Barroso for showing a “lack of vision and lack of a European project for the peoples on the other side of the Mediterranean” (in an interview broadcast by Euronews on 21 September), MEP Marco Cappato (ALDE, Italy) considered that “this European Union has decided to derail Turkey's accession process”. Beyond the justified appeals to Ankara to “relaunch the speed of the reforms”, Mr Cappato felt that “the European strategy of criticism and postponement is the fruit of introverted national policies: we will bring about, in Turkey too, the victory of the most nationalistic, most anti-European, most anti-Western positions, which are currently gaining ground”. The Italian Radical announced the Transnational Radical Party's re-launch of a “Satyagraha for Peace” (inspired by Ghandi: Ed.), especially to “speed up Turkey's process of accession to a federal Europe, as a response to fundamentalisms, illusions of national sovereignty and wars”.
