High level group set up

Brussels, 22/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission adopted a decision to establish a High Level Group on Multilingualism, in response to the 2005 communication “A new framework strategy for multilingualism (see EUROPE 9073). Made up of eleven experts from various European countries, the group, whose task is to advise Commissioner Jan Figel', responsible for multilingualism, will meet for the first time on 3 October. The aim is to develop new initiatives, give fresh impetus to multilingualism and formulate new ideas for a comprehensive approach on multilingualism in the EU, said the Commission in a press release. Mr Figel' said he would ask the experts to work on a series of themes “outside the usual remit of governmental expert groups”, such as languages and research, languages and the media, languages for business, the use of new technologies for translation and interpretation and strategies to promote language learning. “I am confident that this group will make a significant contribution to the promotion and preservation of Europe's multilingual heritage,” said Mr Figel'.
