Galileo, patents, Darfur and ASEM - President Barroso to take part in debate of services of general interest

Brussels, 22/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Next Tuesday, Commission President José Manuel Barroso will take part in the debate on the Rapkay report on services of general interest. 79 amendments have been tabled, thus far, to the report on Turkey, and the Socialist group is reserving the right to vote against if Turkey's strategic role and the progress made, despite the problems which remain, are not recognised, the PES spokesman said on Friday (Belgian Socialist Véronique de Keyser wants the vote to be postponed, and the European Commission has delayed its own report until 8 November: see EUROPE 9268 and 9269). Elsewhere, European Commission statements have been added to the agenda: - Tuesday, on the Galileo programme (see related article); Wednesday, on Darfur (the Council will also make a statement); Thursday, on the ASEM Summit (see EUROPE 9262) and on future action in the area of patents (see EUROPE 9269 on the controversy aroused by Commissioner McCreevy's statements). In addition, on Tuesday, Commissioner Almunia will present the Commission's decision on the excessive debt procedure against Hungary (see EUROPE 9268 for detailed agenda).
