Brussels hopes to host Galileo supervisory authority

Brussels, 22/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The government of the Brussels-Capital region of Belgium decided, on 21 September, to put forward the candidature of the town of Brussels to host the future seat of the Galileo Supervisory Authority, which will be responsible for managing the European system of satellite radio-navigation. The announcement was made in a press release by Benoît Cerexhe, Minister for Economy and Scientific Research in Brussels. Brussels is running against two other Belgian towns, Namur and Mol, but the Brussels government is tabling on the capital's assets and above all on the presence of the European institutions and proximity of the airport. The Belgian Federal Government will be expected to make its choice in time to be able to present its candidate town at the EU Transport Council on 12 October. The Belgian town chosen will then have to compete with other European towns that are already official candidates such as Athens, Barcelona, Strasbourg, Rome, Noordwijk, Cardiff and Ljubjana. The EU Member States will, in principle, take the final decision by the end of the year.
