Brussels, 22/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has cleared the planned acquisition of Cleanaway Holdings Limited by Veolia ES, subject to conditions. The two companies are located in the United Kingdom and provide waste management services. Veolia has agreed to divest its current high temperature incinerator, HTI (over 1,000° Celsius) facility in Fawley in order to ensure that the merged company will continue to have at least one commercial viable competitor on the market for the thermal treatment/incineration of hazardous industrial and commercial (I&C) waste by HTI, the Commission states in a press release. The Commission's market survey revealed that the proposed acquisition could significantly reduce competition as regards waste management by thermal treatment/incineration in the United Kingdom, which only has two high temperature ovens for large scale waste treatment - that of Veolia and that of Cleanaway. Given the proposed transfer, the Comisson concluded that the operation would not significantly hamper competition in the European Economic Area (EEA).
