Strasbourg, 19/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - By an overwhelming majority of 527 votes to 13, with 8 abstentions, the European Parliament adopted the own initiative report by Michael Cramer on 15 June, and, in line with the position of the transport committee, considered that, if the European Rail Traffic management System (ERTMS) is to be successful, it should be introduced in particular on six international freight routes of the Trans-European Network for Transport (TEN-T): Rotterdam-Genoa; Naples-Stockholm; Antwerp-Basel-Lyon; Seville-Lyon-Turin-Ljubljana; Dresden-Vienna-Budapest and Duisburg-Warsaw (see EUROPE 9185)). In addition, the EP considered that Community funding for the ERTMS was necessary, and set the maximum level of Community subsidy at 50% at least in cross-border areas. Finally the EP felt that the EU should make Community funding for rail infrastructure conditional on the installation of the ERTMS.
