Brussels, 19/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, has welcomed the decision by the British government to open up its prisons to Charles Taylor, former dictator of Liberia, if he comes under sentence. This offer was made in order to facilitate a decision by the Security Council of the United Nations concerning the transfer of Charles Taylor to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the High Representative said on 15 June, before this transfer had been carried out. Mr Solana, who is convinced that the trial of Charles Taylor constitutes an important victory for international justice and the fight against impunity throughout West Africa, also stated that he is confident that the necessary measures will be taken to ensure that the Sierra Leonians and West Africans would be able to attend Taylor's trial. Charles Taylor is to be tried for war crimes and violations of human rights.
