Strasbourg, 19/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Last Thursday, the Parliament adopted a resolution calling on all parties present in Timor-Leste to abstain from violence and to initiate global dialogue with reactivation of the democratic process. Given the violence that has shaken the country, MEPs welcome the decision of the authorities to call for an international inquiry into the events of 28 and 29 April, when armed forces opposed military who had been earlier dismissed, and into the riots of 23, 24 and 25 May that followed the trouble. They also call on the government and on President Xanana Gusmão to take every measure possible to restore a stable and safe environment in full respect of the Constitution. The Parliament stresses that, in the current context, the gradual scaling down operation of the UN mission in Timor-Leste must be reversed, and calls for urgent deployment of police forces under UN command. It also calls on the EU to speed up aid required for consolidating democracy and the culture of democracy. The EU is expected to encourage the Timor authorities to ban, dissolve and disarm all paramilitary groups, armed gangs and armed civilians.
