Strasbourg, 19/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Last Thursday, with the adoption of a resolution on the situation in Syria, the Parliament called for the release of all activists held in detention for having signed a petition for normalisation of relations between Syria and Lebanon. More generally, MEPs call for the case of political prisoners to be reviewed and for all political prisoners to be released. They recall that respect of human rights is an essential element in any association agreement with the EU and above all call on Syria to ratify the convention against torture and other inhumane treatment. The Parliament calls on the Commission to assess the human rights situation each year and for Damascus to respect the obligations incumbent upon it in the context of the Euro-Mediterranean agreement.
