Strasbourg, 19/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - Deploring North Korea's lack of cooperation with the international human rights organisations, the Parliament called on the Pyongyang regime last Thursday to make several moves forward. In a resolution, MEPs call on the RPDC to comply with the principles established in the international treaties on human rights (that it has ratified), abolish the death penalty, release all peaceful human rights activists, and ensure freedom of expression and the free movement of all North Koreans. Concerned by the fate of Son Jong Nam, who is condemned to death for alleged treason, the Parliament calls for the sentence not to be carried out. Welcoming the agreement between North Korea and the World Food Programme (WFP) to help the 1.9 million most vulnerable persons, MEPs call on the government not to privilege the officials of the labour party and military, intelligence officers and high-ranking police officers during the distribution of food supplies. They also call on the Chinese government to no longer repatriate North Korean citizens towards the RPDC, where, whatever the reasons are for their having left, they are exposed to severe treatment (detention, torture, long prison sentences or execution).
