Strasbourg, 14/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - In order to put pressure on the Council, on 14 June the Parliament postponed the vote on the report by French Socialist MEP Martine Roure on the protection of citizens' personal data processed in the framework of police and judicial cooperation. The proposal seeks to bring more uniformity and consistency to the EU's data protection principles. While MEPs backed the amended proposal, the vote on the legislative resolution has been postponed until the July plenary session, at the request of the rapporteur, in order to await “firm commitment from the Council” towards the proposal, said Ms Roure. “The annulment by the European Court of Justice of the EU-US agreement on the transfer of air passengers' data (see related article) has shown the urgency of the need for European legislation in this area,” she said. The EP preferred, then, to await the Finnish Presidency of the Council, considered to be closer to the MEPs' position on this issue.
