14/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - After its debate on the European Council last Thursday and Friday, the European Parliament adopted on Wednesday a proposal for a joint resolution from the EPP-ED, PES, ALDE, GUE/NGL and UEN groups on EU membership by Bulgaria and Romania (to which we shall return). In particular, the resolution notes that the accession treaty with these countries provides for safeguard and follow-up measures that may, if necessary, be applied in the years immediately after accession, “which makes any delay in effective accession unnecessary” (Ed. one year deferral from 1 January 2007 to 1 January 20087 has been envisaged in the event of serious difficulty).
