At Finnish presidency, Baron Crespo defends parliament's involvement in Doha negotiations

Brussels, 14/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the end of a meeting with Finnish ministers of trade, Paula Lehtomäki, the president of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, Enrique Baron Crespo, welcomed the “positive attitude” displayed by the representative of the future Finnish presidency on the subject of cooperation between the Council and the EP on questions linked to Doha negotiations. “I recently tried to establish contact with the Austrian presidency on a variety of important subjects but this presidency appears to be absent” from this affair, affirmed Mr Baron in a press release, before pointing out the support his committee had for the close involvement of the European Parliament in the Doha negotiations. Mr Baron continued to appeal for a parliamentary delegation to take part in the work of the Council and Commission during the meeting of trade ministers from WTO countries, planned for the end of June, in an attempt to reach a compromise on modalities on agriculture and access to non-agricultural markets (NAMA, manufactured goods).
