14/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - British European Affairs Minister Geoff Hoon said on Wednesday during his first major speech on Europe that he hopes to relaunch the debate in this country and above all awaken interest for the European Union. In a press release, MEP Diana Wallis (British Liberal Democrat) comments that the only way to have a real debate on Europe is through referendum. Two years ago, a referendum had been promised on the EU's constitutional treaty but this promise has never been formally withdrawn. She feels it would be a grand opportunity for discussion and for giving an idea of the kind of Europe that the British want. She went on to say with irony that Swiss citizens are better informed on Europe than the average Briton, and recalled the referendums organised in Switzerland on questions relating to the EU.
