Warning from Greens over American military action

Brussels, 20/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - German Green MEPs Cem Özdemir and Angelika Beer (president of the European Parliamentary delegation for relations with Iran) have reacted vigorously in a press release to recent statements by Condoleezza Rice on possible American military action against Iran, which, they feel, show that the Bush administration has learned nothing from the Iraq debacle at a time when it is, above all, the United States who should, through intelligent diplomacy, show itself to be up to its key role in this conflict, support the efforts of the EU and give direct negotiations with Iran a chance. On the possibility of once again building a “coalition” around the US, as with Iraq, to give an appearance of international legitimacy to their actions, the MEPs say ironically that this time, not even Micronesia is expected to join. No matter how President Bush may change his team, he clearly refuses to change his policy. They conclude that the warnings of experts and soldiers are clear: the repercussions for the region of an Iraq-style intervention cannot be forecast, and there is a risk of enflaming the region. An attack on a Shiite neighbour would make it all the more difficult to bring peace to Iraq, they say.
