Tribute to Fernand Herman

Brussels, 20/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - Several MEPs and two former European Commissioners will pay tribute to Fernand Herman, MEP from 1979 to 1999 and Minister of Economic Affairs in two Tindemans governments and president of the Union of European Federalists-Belgium, at a seminar in Brussels on 25 April. At the same time, the book Europa Patria Mea - Chronique de quinze années de vie politique, économique et sociale européenne, a selection from the articles written by Fernand Herman every week for fifteen years, from 1990 to 2004, for the newspaper L'Echo de la Bourse will be presented. The seminar will be opened by Wilfried Martens, leader of the European People's Party (in the European Parliament, Mr Herman sat with the EPP group), and Jean-Louis Bourlanges (ALDE, France) will speak of Fernand Herman's contribution to the building of Europe. Thereafter, there will be a round table discussion on Europe of tomorrow: future prospects at institutional level and for economic and financial integration with former European Commissioners Mario Monti and Karel Van Miert, Mercedes Bresso, President of UEF, and MEPs Jean-Luc Dehaene (EPP, Belgium), Gérard Deprez (ALDE, Belgium), Enrique Baron (Socialist, Spain), Jo Leinen (Social Democrat, Germany) and Jens Peter-Bonde (Deputy Leader of the Independence and Democracy group, Denmark). Proceedings will be brought to a close by Franklin Dehousse, judge at the EU Court of First Instance, and Karl von Wogau (EPP-ED, Germany) who will present the book by Fernan Herman.
