Thomas Hammarberg appointed Human Rights Commissioner

Strasbourg, 05/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Swedish national Thomas Hammarberg will take over from Spaniard Alvaro Gil-Robles as the Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner on 1 January for a non-renewable 6 year term of office. Hammarberg used to be Secretary General of Amnesty International and was voted in on a second round of voting by a relative majority, receiving 104 votes, as opposed to 93 for Polish lawyer Marek Antoni Nowicki, and only 33 votes for Belgian energy minister Marc...
