Brussels, 05/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission recently adopted a proposal on the common organisation of the market in seeds (hybrid sweetcorn, peas, beans, lentils, broad beans, peanuts, linseed, colza and sunflower seed) to replace the 1971 regulation with a new updated and simplified regulation. The draft legislation would take account of decisions taken in 2003 on decoupling aid (all of it) although Member States may decide to grant other types of payment linked with production. The Commission suggests a uniform system for all seed imports, the import authorisation system (no derogations would be foreseen) and keeping the option for Finland to pay national aid to cereal farmers according to weather conditions. The Commission suggests the new regulation would come into force on 1 July 2006.
