Brussels, 01/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a press release of 1 June, the European Commission recalls that the European Union, the United States and Iraq are to hold an international conference on Iraq at foreign minister level on 22 June in Brussels. The EU, the US and Iraq state: “The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for the new Iraqi Transitional Government to present its priorities, vision and strategies for the transition period leading up to the next round of elections towards the end of the year. It is also an opportunity to mobilise international support for the Iraqi Transitional Government and its institutions. The conference will be structured around three themes outlined in the UN Security Council Resolution 1546: political process, economic challenges and reconstruction, public order and rule of law”. Iraq will be represented by a large delegation reflecting a vast range of interests and communities, the press release explains, adding: “Over 80 countries and international organisations have been invited. When President Bush visited Brussels on 22 February, the EU and the US agreed to offer to host an international conference in Iraq if the Iraqis so wished. The Iraqi Transitional Government has now written to the EU and the US and asked that such a conference be held to provide Iraq with a vehicle to engage with the international community”.
