Reding and Frattini launch joint initiative on data retention

Brussels, 01/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - On the fringes of the i2010 press conference, Commissioner Viviane Reding announced that she will soon be unveiling a joint initiative with Commissioner Franco Frattini on data retention. She said she hoped the new initiative, which comes under the first pillar, would cover data retention for no longer than a year and would apply to all Member States and all service suppliers. The initiative will be drafted in the greatest transparency, said Reding, adding that the process would be tricky because it involved people's private lives and serious costs for industry. Once adopted, the new legislation will be submitted to the Council and European Parliament under the codecision procedure. In a recent public hearing organised by the European Parliament's ALDE party (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe), MEPs supported the ideas mooted by industry, which strongly opposes any initiatives that would mean heavy costs for industry (see Europe No. 8943).
