Brussels, 01/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Justice and Home Affairs Council is to meet on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 June in Luxembourg. On Thursday, ministers will seek to move forward on the framework decision for defining and penalising racism, but views clearly differ over the possibility of legal cooperation as an obligation. The Council will also tackle telecommunications data retention but European sources say it is not expected that an agreement will be reached, mainly due to the difficulties on the legal base. On Friday, it is the turn of the Libyan dossier. Member States have still to decide how to formulate conditions that should be set by the Council for launching cooperation on illegal immigration and asylum. Furthermore, the Council will, on Thursday evening, celebrate in Schengen the anniversary of the agreement on removing borders within the EU, signed twenty years ago in that town.
