Benita Ferrero-Waldner welcomes postponement of ruling on Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian medic

Brussels, 01/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner has welcomed the decision by the Libyan Supreme Court to postpone its ruling in the case of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian medic sentenced to death for allegedly deliberately infecting sick children in a hospital in Benghazi (see Europe No. 8954). She said this indicates that the death sentence against the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian medic cannot be confirmed. 'After more than six years in jail, it is imperative that a just solution be found in as a matter of urgency,' she commented. In Tripoli last week the Commissioner visited the detainees in prison and assured Colonel Khadafi of the importance the European Commission attributes to this case.
