Brussels, 26/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Margot Wallström, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for institutional relations and communication strategy, addressed a gathering of journalists on 24 May to set out a number of concrete proposals aimed at ensuring greater transparency and openness, and smoothing out relations between the Commission and media. Although it is difficult to speak of Europe, it is not an “impossible mission”, Margo Wallström says, asserting that it comes under “public service duty” to be provided in partnership with the national authorities, civil society and the media. Given the debates surrounding the European Constitution, she stressed that it was vital to clearly explain the benefits of Community policies to European citizens. Ms Wallström also suggested that a television channel or a European radio station should be created by a private company. Jacki Davis, of E!Sharp, said the Commission should change the way it works so that the public knows more about what it does and why. “More than a problem of information, it is a political problem”, another journalist said.
