Brussels, 26/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EP-designated election observation mission for the Lebanese elections left Brussels on Thursday at the request of the Lebanese government and opposition figures such as Walid Joumblatt. The monitoring mission will last four weeks: the Lebanese ballot is to be held on 29 May in Beirut, on 5 June in the south of the country, on 12 June in Mount Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley and on 19 June in the north. The delegation, headed by Carlos Carnero Gonzalez (Spanish Socialist), will have a tricky task as, the day before the elections, the debate within the different political currents in Lebanon focused on the inadequacy of the electoral legislation, and the campaign, according to information gathered by the observer mission, seems marked by stakes going far beyond the election of deputies, predicting the departure of the current president, Emile Lahoud. Like other political leaders, the Druz leader, Walid Joumblatt, hinted during his recent visit to the European Parliament that impeachment procedure would be initiated after the elections.
