26/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commissioner for trade Peter Mandelson will be taking part in a forum on 26 May in Turin between the Commission and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). He expressed his commitment to a modern social dimension in EU trade policy. The Commissioner expressed a wish to guarantee decent working standards but not disguised protectionism. He noted that under the “System of Generalised Preferences Plus” additional tariffs would benefit vulnerable countries that have both ratified and implemented the main international conventions of the UN and ILO on jobs and human rights, environmental protection and good governance. He also hammered home the fact that Europe had to have a social dimension that was stronger, which its trade policy needed too. He considers that multilateral liberalisation of trade could be a healthy social policy.
