Brussels, 26/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Representatives of populations living in the Arctic regions are calling on the EU to take action against global warming. During a visit to Brussels, they expressed their concern for their own environment, and also about the considerable risks that climate change has for the whole of the planet in the longer term. Gary Harrison, the chief of Chickaloon Village in Alaska, stressed that climate change has already had an impact on the Arctic and that it is important for the Europeans to respect their commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. Olav Mathis Eira, vice-president of the Saami Council which represents the Saami people of Norway, Sweden, Finland and North-West Russia, pointed out that the inhabitants of the Arctic should have the right to determine their own priorities about the use of their territories and resources and to decide how to face the challenges posed by climate change. Larisa Abrutina, vice-president of the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, said that the delegation had not come to Brussels to gain sympathy, but to gain action.
